Modeling and Simulation 101
Objective
Provide a broad understanding of Department of Defense (DoD) Modeling and Simulation (M&S) terms, concepts, organizations, activities, and issues.
Course Description
MS101 is a two or four hour tutorial designed to be delivered to large audiences, ideally at conferences, seminars, and symposiums. Presenting basic M&S information in a fast paced, one way information flow format, it relies heavily on multi-media and enhanced graphics. MS 101 presents basic DoD M&S information. Targeting newcomers to M&S as it is being used in DoD. MS 101 presents basic M&S terminology and describes the DoD M&S vision and strategy and how these evolved. The DoD M&S governance is described in detail, to include a layman's description of the Global Information Grid (GIG), High Level Architecture (HLA), Test and Training Enabling Architecture (TENA), and Data Discovery. The presentation addresses issues on representation of the natural environment, systems, and humans and organizations; Verification, Validation, and Accreditation (VV&A); up to date information on current M&S programs; and M&S information sources. Additionally, a shorter executive version of the MS101 is available for senior-level personnel.
Course Goal
The tutorial provides basic DoD M&S information to new comers to modeling and simulation who need a quick dose of M&S to assist them in becoming more proficient in their jobs. MS 101 addresses issues in all seven DoD M&S communities (Training, Analysis, Acquisition, Planning, Intelligence, Test and Evaluation) and Experimentation. Participants have included military and government representatives from the DoD and Joint staffs, all Services, industry, academia, allies, and contractors supporting DoD M&S activities.
