Modeling and Simulation 101
Objective
Provide a broad understanding of DoD M&S terms, concepts, organizations, activities, and issues
Course Description
MS 101 presents the major topics included in the five day M&S Staff Officer Course (MSSOC) in a compressed format. It is a half-day tutorial designed to be delivered to large audiences, ideally at conferences, seminars, and symposiums. Presenting basic M&S information in a fast paced, one way information flow format, it relies heavily on multi-media and enhanced graphics.
Target Audience
The target audience is newcomers to modeling and simulation who need a quick dose of M&S to assist them in becoming more proficient in their jobs. Participants have included military and government representatives from the DoD and Joint staffs, all Services, industry, academia, allies, and contractors supporting DoD M&S activities. MS 101 addresses issues in all three DoD M&S functional areas of Training, Analysis, and Acquisition.
MS 101 Tutorial Course Curriculum
The MS 101 tutorial is grouped into two major themes:
Fundamentals
History; Basic Jargon; M&S Overview; DoD Role in M&S; DoD M&S Policy; DoD M&S Organizational Structure; Functional Areas; and major Joint Programs
Implementation
Common Technical Framework; Common Services; Representation of the Environment, Systems, and Human Behavior; Benefits; Challenges; and Information Sources
The course is presented in four 50 minute blocks with a 10 minute break in between. The first block presents M&S fundamentals. It provides the historical context for M&S, defines key M&S terms and concepts, and presents the ways M&S is currently used. Block 2 discusses how to implement M&S. This presentation focuses on the latest technology and the DoD M&S Master Plan that helped DoD determine how to implement M&S technology throughout the community. Block 3 & 4 go into detail on M&S interoperability via the DoD Common Technical Framework and provides a variety of information sources.
